Weekly Family Meal Plan: 7 Easy Dinners + Grocery List (2026)
Updated 6 November 2026 · Serves 2 adults and 2 children
This weekly family meal plan gives you seven easy dinners, one grocery list, and a 45-minute Sunday prep that makes the busy nights quicker. It's built so ingredients get used twice: Sunday's roast chicken becomes Monday's quesadillas, Tuesday's chili tops Thursday's baked potatoes, and the turkey meatballs make enough to freeze half. Five nights involve real cooking; two are mostly reheating.

The week at a glance
| Day | Dinner | Hands-on time | Cooks once, eats twice? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sheet-pan chicken thighs with potatoes and carrots | 20 min | Roast extra chicken for Monday |
| Monday | Chicken and cheese quesadillas, corn and cucumber | 15 min | Uses Sunday's chicken |
| Tuesday | Beef and bean chili with rice | 25 min | Make a double batch |
| Wednesday | Lemon garlic salmon, rice and green beans | 20 min | — |
| Thursday | Chili-loaded baked potatoes | 10 min | Uses Tuesday's chili |
| Friday | Flatbread pizza night | 15 min | Kids build their own |
| Saturday | Spaghetti and turkey meatballs | 30 min | Freeze half the meatballs |
Hands-on time is a rough guide for an everyday home cook. Oven and simmering time comes on top.
Sunday prep (about 45 minutes)
Do these while Sunday's chicken roasts and the rest of the week gets easier:
- Chop 3 onions and 4 cloves of garlic. Keep half for Tuesday's chili and half for Saturday's meatballs in two sealed containers in the fridge.
- Slice the peppers for Monday's quesadillas and Friday's pizzas.
- Wash and trim the green beans for Wednesday.
- Shred the extra chicken once it has cooled a little, and refrigerate it for Monday.
- Cut the cucumber into sticks for lunchboxes and Monday's dinner.
The seven dinners
Each dinner below gives the main ingredients and the short method. Quantities feed 2 adults and 2 children with a little to spare.
Sunday: Sheet-pan chicken thighs with potatoes and carrots
You need: 3 lb (1.4 kg) chicken thighs, 1.5 lb (700 g) potatoes, 1 lb (450 g) carrots, olive oil, garlic, dried oregano, salt and pepper.
- Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Cut the potatoes and carrots into chunks and toss with oil, salt and oregano on a large sheet pan.
- Add the chicken thighs, skin side up, rub with oil, garlic and seasoning.
- Roast for 35–45 minutes, until the potatoes are golden and the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part (the USDA's safe temperature for all poultry).
- Set aside 3 or 4 thighs for Monday before serving.
Monday: Chicken and cheese quesadillas
You need: Sunday's leftover chicken, 8 flour tortillas, 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheese, 1 sliced pepper, salsa, frozen corn, cucumber sticks.
- Shred the chicken and warm the corn.
- Fill half of each tortilla with chicken, cheese and peppers, then fold.
- Cook in a dry frying pan for 2–3 minutes a side until crisp and the cheese has melted.
- Cut into wedges and serve with salsa, corn and cucumber.
Tuesday: Beef and bean chili (double batch)
You need: 2 lb (900 g) ground beef, half the chopped onions and garlic, 2 cans kidney beans, 1 can black beans, 2 × 28 oz (800 g) cans crushed tomatoes, chili powder, ground cumin, rice to serve.
- Brown the beef with the onions and garlic until the beef reaches 160°F (71°C) and there's no pink left.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons chili powder (less for young children) and 1 tablespoon cumin.
- Add the tomatoes and drained beans, and simmer for at least 30 minutes.
- Serve half with rice tonight. Cool the other half and refrigerate it for Thursday.
Wednesday: Lemon garlic salmon, rice and green beans
You need: 4 salmon fillets (about 1.25 lb / 560 g), 1 lemon, garlic, butter or olive oil, rice, 1 lb (450 g) green beans.
- Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Put the salmon on a lined tray with lemon slices, garlic and a little butter or oil.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, until it flakes easily and reaches 145°F (63°C).
- Steam or boil the green beans for 4–5 minutes and cook the rice.
- Swap in chicken breast or white fish if your children won't eat salmon.
Thursday: Chili-loaded baked potatoes (leftovers night)
You need: Tuesday's leftover chili, 4 large baking potatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream or plain Greek yogurt.
- Bake the potatoes at 400°F (200°C) for about an hour, or microwave them for 8–12 minutes until soft.
- Reheat the chili until steaming hot all the way through.
- Split the potatoes and top with chili, cheese and a spoon of sour cream.
Friday: Flatbread pizza night
You need: 4 naan or flatbreads, a jar of pizza or marinara sauce, 8 oz (225 g) shredded mozzarella, sliced peppers, plus toppings everyone likes.
- Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Let everyone spread sauce on their own flatbread and add cheese and toppings.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until the cheese bubbles.
Friday is a good night for "use up first" leftovers: the last of the peppers, a few slices of ham, or the end of a block of cheese.
Saturday: Spaghetti and turkey meatballs
You need: 2 lb (900 g) ground turkey, the rest of the chopped onions and garlic, 1 egg, ½ cup (50 g) breadcrumbs, 1 jar marinara sauce, 1 lb (450 g) spaghetti, parmesan.
- Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix the turkey, onion, garlic, egg and breadcrumbs, then roll into walnut-sized balls.
- Bake on a lined tray for 18–20 minutes, until they reach 165°F (74°C), the USDA's safe temperature for ground poultry.
- Warm the marinara, add half the meatballs, and serve over spaghetti with parmesan.
- Cool the other half, then freeze them for next week. The USDA says cooked leftovers keep in the fridge for 3 to 4 days or frozen for 3 to 4 months.
Breakfasts and lunches
Most families don't need a new breakfast every day. Rotate three or four:
- Breakfast: oatmeal or overnight oats with fruit; scrambled eggs on toast; yogurt with granola and berries; peanut butter (or a seed butter if a school is nut-free) on toast with a banana.
- Lunch: leftover chicken wraps (Monday), chili in a thermos (Wednesday), pasta salad from the spare spaghetti, or a "snack box" of crackers, cheese, cucumber sticks and fruit.
Grocery list (family of four)
Check what you already have before you shop. Oil, spices, rice and pasta often last more than a week.

Swaps for picky eaters, allergies and diets
- Picky eaters: serve the "build your own" nights (quesadillas, pizza, baked potatoes) with toppings in separate bowls. Put one food each child already eats on every plate, and keep sauces and spice on the side.
- Vegetarian: use 2 extra cans of beans or 1 cup (200 g) dried red lentils in place of the beef in the chili, chickpeas in the quesadillas, and lentil or veggie meatballs on Saturday.
- Gluten-free: gluten-free tortillas, flatbreads, pasta and breadcrumbs, and check the chili powder and stock labels. For a whole week built on naturally gluten-free foods, see our gluten-free meal plan.
- Dairy-free: dairy-free cheese for the quesadillas and pizza, olive oil in place of butter, and skip the parmesan.
- Nut and other allergies: this plan has no nuts in the recipes, but always check labels on sauces, breads and seasonings for your family's allergens.
Make next week easier
- Keep this week. Write the plan on the fridge or keep this page, and reuse it in a month with two dinners swapped.
- Rotate two weeks. Many families alternate between two set weeks and only change things for birthdays and holidays.
- Plan around what's left. Start next week's plan with what's in the fridge. See how to plan meals around what you already have.
- Shop once. One planned shop beats several top-up trips. For more on cutting the bill, read cheap meal prep.
Plan your family's week in an app
Disclosure: FoodiePrep (foodieprep.ai) is our app. Its limits are listed below as well as what it does.
If you'd rather not write the list by hand, you can ask Chef Foodie, the AI assistant in FoodiePrep, for a week like this one, for example: "Plan 7 family dinners for 2 adults and 2 kids, nothing spicy, chicken twice, Thursday as chili leftovers, about $4 a portion." It builds the week on a calendar you can edit:
- Different servings per meal, such as lunch for one and dinner for four.
- A separate kids' dinner on the same night, with its own requirements, shown as its own row ("Dinner · Kids").
- Leftovers and batch cooking: put one meal's leftovers in a later slot, or "Batch cook" a meal across the week.
- A budget per serving, which steers every suggestion toward that cost.
- Your pantry: plan "from my pantry" so meals use what you already have.
- One grocery list built from the whole week, which you can shop at a supported supermarket's website with Guided Shopping (for example Walmart, Kroger, Target, Tesco or Sainsbury's).
- Reuse a good week: plans you create are saved as templates.
What it doesn't do: there are no separate family profiles, so a household shares one login, and the pantry isn't tracked automatically (you add items or scan a photo, and nothing is deducted as you cook). If you used Ollie before it closed, our guide to Ollie alternatives compares family meal-planning apps, and our meal planning apps with grocery lists comparison covers more.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a weekly meal plan for my family?
Check your calendar and your fridge, pick five or six dinners (including one or two that reuse leftovers), then write one grocery list for the week. Do it on the same day each week. Our free meal planning template has space for the plan, the grocery list and a "use up first" box.
How many dinners should a family meal plan include?
Plan five or six dinners and leave one or two nights for leftovers or eating out. Planning all seven usually means food goes to waste when plans change midweek.
What are easy family dinners for a busy week?
Sheet-pan dinners, quesadillas, chili, baked potatoes, pasta and build-your-own pizza are among the easiest. They need little hands-on time, children can help, and most of them reheat well or turn into another meal.
How much food does a family of four need for a week?
It depends on your children's ages and appetites, but this plan's grocery list is a good starting point for 2 adults and 2 children. Check what's left at the end of the week and adjust the quantities next time.
How do I meal plan for picky eaters?
Include build-your-own meals and put one food each child already eats on every plate. Serve sauces and toppings separately so everyone can adjust their own plate, and add one new food at a time.
Can I freeze any of these meals?
Yes. The chili and the turkey meatballs both freeze well. The USDA says cooked leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge or 3 to 4 months in the freezer. Cool them quickly and label the container with the date.
Is there an app that makes a family meal plan for you?
Yes. Apps like FoodiePrep can build a week of family dinners from a request and create the grocery list for you. Compare options in our guide to Ollie alternatives, written after the Ollie family meal-planning app closed.
